Turning Social Media Into Social Networking

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

Today a group of us presented a workshop for the MBA Career Services Council in Seattle. This is a group of professional Career Services Directors who run the career management offices of the nation’s (and world’s) MBA programs. My cohorts were Roy Young, CEO of BeyondB-School.com; Jennifer Vancil, Graduate Career Counselor for the MBA program at Colorado State University; and Michelle Hardy, Sr. Associate Director, MBA Employer Relations for the University of Texas McCombs School of Business.

The presentation was entitled “Turning Social Media Into Social Networking: Creating Door Opening Relationships Beyond Technology” and was all about supporting MBA students to use their unique status as a student to get out and connect with thought leaders and industry professionals so as to build the connections that land jobs through the stealth or “backdoor” method. Darrell’s presentation focused on the “10 Time Tested Principles for Launching an Effective Backdoor Campaign” from Part 2 of his new book Never Apply for a Job Again: Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest. The groups presentation received excellent reviews!

Get Clear, Get Connected Free Teleseminar, Wed., Feb. 15

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

Get more details HEREGet the handout HERE. Tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 5:30pm PST, I will host a complimentary teleseminar to support you to gain clarity on your career direction as well as get out and make the stealth connections that will help you open doors.

After finishing my newest book, Never Apply for a Job Again: Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest, which is all about how to create stealth relationships that open doors–so you don’t have to knock on the front door of applying for open positions like everyone else–I realized some folks don’t have the clarity yet of exactly what “backdoors” they want to open.

So, quickly after getting that book off to my publisher and the printer, I sat down to write Finding the S Spot: Career Pleasure Secrets for Merging Skills, Play and Pay to help people get clarity about their true passionate interests. Often we’re so caught up in just doing what we’ve always done that it takes some really deep introspection to get at the core of our being in where what we’d really thrive in.

So, tonight I’ll be offering a complimentary teleseminar to my subscribers to cover the principles involved in both phases offered in these books: Get Clear, Get Connected! Get more details HERE.

Career Lessons From the Lives of Babes (Part 3)

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

My son spent 4 hours the first day volunteering for the dog rescue outfit…and came home having loved every minute. As I mentioned, he loves dogs and I felt/knew this would innately appeal to his passion. So, he went back the next day for another 4 hours…and when I picked him up, they said they had paid others to work with them in the past who had not worked as hard as he did.  (Wait, whose son is this????)

They said he just never stopped asking for things to do and that the dogs simply loved him–having become friends with some of the same dogs that bit others. They said they really wanted to try to find some funds to be able to keep him there, because they knew he was quietly wanting to get a job somewhere he could be paid.

He took a couple days off to continue the job search but went back for a full 8-hour day before the weekend.  By the end of the week, they found some ways to begin financially honoring his great work…and claimed that he was now “integral” to the whole operation.

Lesson #3: Never underestimate what can unfold from spending time doing what you love and making a difference for people (serving) in your areas of passionate interest–even volunteer work!

Career Notes: A Career in the Making?

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

Hunter Gurney, my son, just received a contract for his band to play at 8pm on Dec. 17 at The Whisky on Sunset Blvd. Yep, Whisky a Go Go, the same place that the Doors and so many others started out.  Even my mom’s first boyfriend, Johnny Ramastella (aka Johnny Rivers) made his mark there.  (No pressure Hunter!)  Kudos son!  He has 15 tickets he can sell if you’d like to attend!

Crushing Job Search at ProductCamp SoCal

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

The Orange County Product Managers Association hosted their 3rd ProductCamp SoCal on October 15. This year’s “un”conference was the largest ever, with over 300 attendees. The “un”conference setup means that, of all the possible presentations to be delivered, the attendees don’t vote until the morning of the event which they want to hear. My presentation, “Crushing Job Search: Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest” was chosen as one of only 30 presentations for this all-day “un”conference.

My talk centered on the idea of YOU as the product, and the culturally-ingrained “rules” one needs to break to stand out in this economy. I also focused on the 10 principles of launching an effective “stealth” career campaign…the subject of my upcoming book.

Working World Job Fair

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

Come network at a FREE Job Fair hosted by Working World Magazine this Thursday, October 13, at the Hollywood & Highland Renaissance Hotel. I will be speaking on the principles outlined in my upcoming book,Never Apply for a Job Again: Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest. I will also be raffling off some of my other books.

Remember, the power of a Job Fair is not to expect to land a job, but to connect with LOTS of other people for networking purposes. Never focus only on only

the folks behind the booths, but talk to everyone else at the event who may also be looking. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure…and someone you meet may have information that can move you forward in your search! Talking to people is what gets you hired…everyone, everywhere!  Go HERE to register for FREE!

Manuscript Complete! In Bookstores Nationwide in Jan, 2012!

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

I’ve been underground for the best part of two months wrapping up the expansion of my ebook Backdoor Job Search: Never Apply for a Job Again! 10 Time-Tested Principles forLaunching an Effective Backdoor Campaign into a doubled-the-size manuscript to be in bookstores in January, 2012, under the new title Never Apply for a Job Again: Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest. (My publisher thought it best to change the title around.)

The new version will expand upon the principles as well as give some highly useful tools for creating “stealth” (the backdoor word substitute) campaigns. I’m excited to have just received another great endorsement from Keith Ferrazzi, bestselling author of Never Eat Alone:

If you are in a transition now, however, read the eBook now, don’t wait for the movie! Check it out HERE.“Never Apply for a Job applies the basic truth of my own philosophy to your job search: relationships are the key.  Whether it’s a job, a career change, or even an entrepreneurial venture, it’s the people who make anything possible for you.  Anything!”–Keith Ferrazzi, co-author of the bestselling Never Eat Alone
