Career Notes: A Career in the Making?

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

Hunter Gurney, my son, just received a contract for his band to play at 8pm on Dec. 17 at The Whisky on Sunset Blvd. Yep, Whisky a Go Go, the same place that the Doors and so many others started out.  Even my mom’s first boyfriend, Johnny Ramastella (aka Johnny Rivers) made his mark there.  (No pressure Hunter!)  Kudos son!  He has 15 tickets he can sell if you’d like to attend!

Crushing Job Search at ProductCamp SoCal

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

The Orange County Product Managers Association hosted their 3rd ProductCamp SoCal on October 15. This year’s “un”conference was the largest ever, with over 300 attendees. The “un”conference setup means that, of all the possible presentations to be delivered, the attendees don’t vote until the morning of the event which they want to hear. My presentation, “Crushing Job Search: Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest” was chosen as one of only 30 presentations for this all-day “un”conference.

My talk centered on the idea of YOU as the product, and the culturally-ingrained “rules” one needs to break to stand out in this economy. I also focused on the 10 principles of launching an effective “stealth” career campaign…the subject of my upcoming book.

Working World Job Fair

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

Come network at a FREE Job Fair hosted by Working World Magazine this Thursday, October 13, at the Hollywood & Highland Renaissance Hotel. I will be speaking on the principles outlined in my upcoming book,Never Apply for a Job Again: Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest. I will also be raffling off some of my other books.

Remember, the power of a Job Fair is not to expect to land a job, but to connect with LOTS of other people for networking purposes. Never focus only on only

the folks behind the booths, but talk to everyone else at the event who may also be looking. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure…and someone you meet may have information that can move you forward in your search! Talking to people is what gets you hired…everyone, everywhere!  Go HERE to register for FREE!

Manuscript Complete! In Bookstores Nationwide in Jan, 2012!

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

I’ve been underground for the best part of two months wrapping up the expansion of my ebook Backdoor Job Search: Never Apply for a Job Again! 10 Time-Tested Principles forLaunching an Effective Backdoor Campaign into a doubled-the-size manuscript to be in bookstores in January, 2012, under the new title Never Apply for a Job Again: Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest. (My publisher thought it best to change the title around.)

The new version will expand upon the principles as well as give some highly useful tools for creating “stealth” (the backdoor word substitute) campaigns. I’m excited to have just received another great endorsement from Keith Ferrazzi, bestselling author of Never Eat Alone:

If you are in a transition now, however, read the eBook now, don’t wait for the movie! Check it out HERE.“Never Apply for a Job applies the basic truth of my own philosophy to your job search: relationships are the key.  Whether it’s a job, a career change, or even an entrepreneurial venture, it’s the people who make anything possible for you.  Anything!”–Keith Ferrazzi, co-author of the bestselling Never Eat Alone

Urgent Call for Stories – Get Published!

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

Got a Good Story? Get it Published in My Upcoming Book and Journal!

Two Questions:

1) Have you ever made a cool career transition through the “backdoor?”

Meaning, have you used the leverage of relationships and/or research to create or tap into a job or career opportunity in a non-traditional job-search way?

Everyone knows how to apply for jobs, surf job boards, and connect with a recruiter…but have you ever used your own professional networking in an interesting and unique way to land something through the backdoor that you couldn’t have landed through the front door?

2) Have you been through a midlife crisis career challenge that you came out the other side of more empowered and on track for your true purpose in life?

Midlife crisis is a concept, much less reality, that many folks have experienced in a myriad of ways (e.g., loss of a loved one, divorce, financial devastation, sickness, etc.)…

but have you faced that demon that takes so many people out of the game and come out on top, with a passionate purpose in life to show for it?

If either of these subject areas apply to you, I invite you to submit your stories for a chance to be published in a new book that will land in bookstores early next year, and/or a professional career journal that I will edit this summer.

I have FREE GIFTS for all who offer a story, and a signed copy of the final book or journal that includes your story, if chosen, with special acknowledgement on my website!

Please GO HERE to Submit Your Backdoor Job Search Success Story:

Please GO HERE to Submit Your Midlife Crisis Career Recovery Story:

Thank you for sharing your story to inspire others either to be their most effective in career transition OR to forge ahead through the trials of midlife to pursue their passion and purpose!

If you know someone with an inspiring story, please forward this email so that their story can be told!

The Cobbler’s Shoes of Personal Branding

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

I spoke for the Orange County Chapter of the Marketing Executives Networking Group (MENG) this evening, covering some of the ways by which individuals can separate themselves from the crowd the same way companies and products do. It’s interesting that even professionals that do this for a living for products and services need support to get past those internal governors placed on us by the cultural “rules” that you’re not supposed to toot your own horn nor beat your own drum.

It’s a human dilemma we all deal with…but I say that, if you have special talents, skills, and a unique essence that you bring to everything you touch (which, by the way, everyone does), and you’re NOT promoting it effectively in the best, ear-catching and branded way of ownership, then you’re in effect cheating the world.

OK…now who feels guilty of cheating??

The Emotional Side of Career Transition

By Darrell Gurney | Blog

Are you a senior executive going through a challenging time, both work-wise and emotionally, around a career transition? We often don’t share the true esteem-shattering aspects of the search process. Listen here to an audio from the wife of a client who called me completely out of the blue after just a couple weeks of working with her husband through this program.
Once she began talking, I asked her if I could record the call, and what she shares will give hope to anyone going through transition.
